A big week of family catch ups, new adventures and bewilderment ……

We caught up with Orren’s American family in Mechanicsville, Iowa and felt overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of people I have never met before. It was amazing to have four generations of the one family all together at once. Many of them are over 80 and 90 and still so bright and even working the land!

We went out and saw Farrington Farms and the original family home in which our boys Grandad was born. It was lovely for Orren to catch up with family he had not seen in so long and to relive childhood memories. Family is so special!

We came across the American Pickers Antique Archaeology shop in LeClaire, Iowa and got to see the famous Von Dutch bike, much to Orren’s excitement.

Then it was on to Chicago for a couple of days.

Small boy Myles ended up sick for a day. I think a bit of exhaustion kicked in. Nothing that a day in bed didn’t fix.

We loved Chicago. Being named “the Windy City” is very apt. Wind roars along through the narrow streets with high rises on both sides.

We explored fabulous art museums and had one of those “Ahhh” moments showing the boys a Monet, when Byron went “Yeh Mum, I know what that is! We copied that one in art at school, but the real one looks much better!” These are the moments that make it all worthwhile!

The Field Museum was absolutely fabulous for the kids and adults alike. We just needed to give ourselves way more time.

It has been lovely to see the boys willing to try more and more different foods, to acknowledge more differences in the areas we travel through. I think they are truly beginning to appreciate this amazing experience we are part of and are well on the way to becoming food critiques!

About Conversations from Afar

This series follows the journey of Anita, Orren and their two boys Byron and Myles, who left Australia in November 2014 to experience life in different parts of the world. They made their way to America where they discovered incredible places, met wonderful people, and put down roots for a six-month stint working in a totally different job. They ventured to Costa Rica, Egypt, England, Scotland, Italy, Germany and France and made so many memories along the way.

Each week we publish a new conversation. Follow their journey.
