Ultimate guide to family accommodation Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

It might seem like a long time away but if you haven’t booked your accommodation for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, then you need to move now!

Finding accommodation for a major event like the Commonwealth Games can be a real headache, especially as the venues are spread out, the accommodation costs skyrocket, and rooms sell out fast. You also don’t want to spend all your time in gridlock traffic.

Here are our tips on getting the right accommodation, plus a full list of the sports, their venues and what are the best locations to stay in, for each venue.

Top tips to finding the right accommodation

  1. Stay close to your venue. Gold Coast traffic isn’t great at the best of times, so getting anywhere is probably going to be a nightmare.
  2. You are most likely going to have to book for three or more nights. There are only a handful of places that will take single night bookings. Most require a minimum of 3 or 7 nights and the prices are very high.
  3. Consider other options such as AirBnB, camping, tourist parks, and private rentals. A word of warning: book through a reputable source to safeguard you against fake accommodation and fraud.
  4. How to book. We’ve tried out the official accommodation site but found it to be very time consuming, as every single listing only provides a name and contact details. As a parent with limited spare time, I need to be able to see what’s available on the dates I want to book, what are the facilities, beds, and reviews, what is it near, and what does it look like? So here are my picks for booking your accommodation for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games the easy way.

Best places to book accommodation

We haven’t listed the names of any particular hotels here because they are selling out so fast. Instead we’ve provided the links to the best places to book your family accommodation.

Booking.com: This is the booking site we trust and use all the time. It’s easy to compare prices, facilities and to look over reviews from past guests. Check for latest prices and availability during the Games

Gold Coast Holiday Homes: They have quite a number of apartment and house listings that look to be for a minimum of 7 nights. Take a look at their properties.

Mantra Hotels: There are a few big hotels from this chain on the Gold Coast and we’ve found Mantra to be good for family accommodation. It looks like they’ve taken their listings off other booking sites for the duration of the Games so you’ll have to go direct. See what’s available.

AirBnB: Renting out someone’s house, granny flat or apartment can be a great way to stay as a family. We book with AirBnB quite a bit. It’s not as easy as booking a hotel but just make sure you check the reviews, cancellation policy, what’s included, and the house rules. If they all check out, then you should be okay. If you haven’t used it before use this link to get $30+ off your first stay.

Camp Gold Coast: They are currently taking expressions of interest to camp in and around the Gold Coast. This is major event camping at its biggest. Register your interest.
